And while it certainly highlights the masculine way of thinking, it conveniently sweeps the feminine experience under the rug. But fear not! In the modern retellings of Pygmalion, our statues don’t just sit there looking pretty. No, they rebel, challenge their creators, and demand to be seen on their own terms. Because let’s face it, the modern Galatea can’t be reduced to a mere stone object in some man’s hands, waiting to be moulded according to his whims. No, she’s got her voice, her sass, and she’s not afraid to use it.
In this art project, I want to focus on HER, on the TRANSFORMATION. What must have felt like to become human? To see for the first time? To feel her heart beat the first time? First sounds?
Imagine the rush Galatea felt as she went from stone-cold silence to feeling all the feels. Joy, confusion—maybe a mix of both? Sounds a lot like the rollercoaster of emotions modern women ride, right
Ah, the grand prize bestowed upon obedient women by our ever-so-gracious male-dominated society: the miraculous transformation from stone to flesh. How utterly romantic! Picture this: a man, armed with his chisel and his whimsical fantasies, sculpting his very own ‘perfect’ woman out of a mix of rock and daydreams. << Sureeeely>>, he was only “caressing her cheeks and putting nice dresses on her” Or is this the old version of an S*x doll?
She’s passive, she’s stunningly beautiful, and oh, she’s thrilled to adore and obey her dear creator-husband. Why, she doesn’t even bother claiming an identity for herself; society’s kind enough to deny her that little luxury for centuries. Aptly dubbed ‘Pygmalion,’ this myth isn’t about ‘her’—it’s all about ‘him.’

Pygmalion’s infatuation often overshadows Galatea’s essence. Yet, our focus shifts to her awakening as a woman, bypassing the romanticized view of an artist’s fixation. We seek to understand her as a sentient being, not merely an object of desire.

Within our lens, we captured the poignant moment of Galatea’s tear. A tear that embodies the delicate balance between her sculpted origins and the blossoming of life within her. The blue hue symbolizes the awakening of her consciousness, a soulful emergence from an artful shell.

Now, I leave you with a question to ponder: Which story shall I deconstruct next? My passion lies in unravelling narratives where women can transcend objectification and reclaim their agency. I want to reshape tales where women are more than passive figures— empower them to rewrite their destinies.
